ATtiny85 PIR sensor

This is my second project using the ATtiny85. I have previously made, and use, these PIR sensors with "power hungry" Arduino Pro Minis. I usually have to replace the batteries in these devices every 2 months. It depends on how much we move in the rooms they are located. They use 1000mAh CR2477 coin cells. These batteries are quite "big", compared with other coin cell batteries.

Moteino freezer monitor

I bought four ER14505 LS14500 AA 3.6V 2400mAh lithium batteries and battery holders for PCB and thought I should use the rest of my Moteinos. I had three of them laying around that I don't use.

For this project I use the same code as my other sensors around the house, so the only job was to get it on a vero board, solder and box it. Since the LS14500 battery works down to -40 degrees Celsius, it will do just fine in the deep freezer.

Lessons learned - First year

After a year I will say I have gained some experience in the field of DIY IoT and home automation. The first lesson is that it's not easy to plan what you want and actually go for it. Things and desires change on the way to the goal. I started with a Tellstick Duo, but I feel I outgrew it.

X10 PIR sensor for RFXCOM transceiver

After a lot of experimentation, research and prototyping, I finally have all the parts I need to finish my PIR sensors. I plan to have one in each room, well almost.

They will have two functions. Primarily they will be used to track us and switch lights and heating (Nexa remote switches) as appropriate when we are home. The switching will follow certain rules, like time of day, who is home, weekday, weekend etc. When no one is home, they will be part of the security system and notify us, using Pushbullet, if they sense movement while we are not home. Both functions will be controlled by DomotiGa running on a Raspberry Pi, using a RFXCOM rfxtrx433e USB transceiver.

Wireless temperature sensors

As I have several projects down the line I had to start somewhere. In this project I will build a wireless temperature sensor system. The main goal of the project is to be able to see the temperatures in several rooms at home when I'm away. I will also have a temperature node outside.

To manage this I will use Moteinos. I spent some time trying to find the best hardware for this. Before I decided I looked at XBee, JeeNode, PanStamp among others. They all have their uses, but I felt that Moteino would do the job best for this specific project. For later projects I just might try out the PanStamp as well.
